A few pieces from Maverick Design.

These are for a wholesale-to-public candy retailer, Sweet Xpress in Durban.

Zinkplaat, which means corrugated metal has been part of the South African context for centuries. It was the material used to house and shelter farmers and labourers alike. Yes, it part of the humanness that we share as South Africans who might not have walked in the shoes of other forefathers, but have a real understanding of the road that was travelled.

One of the themes that runs rife through our South African history is that of juxtaposition. It was foreigners against natives, wealth against poverty and of course, black against white. Zinkplaat mirrors this “ubuntu” in its title – Mooi Besoedeling – Beautiful Pollution.

Now, the way that Zinkplaat has incorporated all of this into their album cover is that it is shrink-wrapped and placed on the shelf as any other CD. Once undressed, a guitar pick is revealed with which one is required to scratch off the top-most layer of the CD’s front and back covers.

A bit of good ol’ South African ingenuity – I think so.

Cheers,

Designed by Kenny J. Huang from Canada for the uber elite (and once-off design) 4th kitchenware store on 4th Avenue, Vancouver.

You might agree with me when I say that this packaging is good enough to eat! nom nom nom.

Enjoy!
